Ventura and Oxnard’s Preeminent Myopia Control Practice

Myopia (nearsightedness) is the biggest long term health concern for your child’s eyes.

What is now being called an epidemic, with up to 5 billion people expected to be myopic by 2050, myopia has jumped into the spotlight in recent years due to increased understanding that medium and high myopia are major risk factors for eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Cataracts, and Macular Degeneration. With intervention at a young age, the risks associated with myopia can be drastically reduced.

First you should know a bit

Myopia is expected to effect 5 billion people by the year 2050. In Asia the rates of Myopia in high schools and Universities are as high as 80-90%. The reasons for the spectacular growth rate of myopia is speculative, however research is indicating that less time outdoors and more time with digital devices may play a role. One thing is extremely clear, Myopia and its related complications is and will continue to be a serious public health crisis throughout the world for many years to come. In recent years Myopia has come on the agenda of the World Health Organization among other organizations.

The risks associated with medium and high myopia are the foremost reason for controlling myopia at a young age. Because Myopia progresses as the child ages, effective risk reduction demands immediate action as soon as a child develops myopia. Myopia has been conclusively linked to increased risk for some of the most debilitating eye diseases included Myopic Maculopathy, Retinal Detachment, Glaucoma, and Cataracts. In short, the higher the level of myopia the higher the associated risks of vision impairment or blindness later on in life.

Tremendous strides in research and development of highly effective treatment options to slow down the progression of a child’s myopia/nearsightedness has been achieved in the last decade. A skilled Optometrist today has the tools to slow down childhood myopia by an average rate of 50% which dramatically reduces the risks of later development of eye disease. Orthokeratology, Atropine, and Multifocal Contact Lenses have been rigorously tested and shown to be effective. And the ability to slow down Myopia effectively has become a reality even with young children.

Let's Talk About

Controlling Myopia In Children

ORTHOK (Orthokeratology)

OrthoK (called by many names including orthokeratology, corneal shaping, gentle vision shaping) has long been considered the gold standard in myopia control. Aside from its proven effectiveness at slowing the progression of myopia dramatically, it has the added benefit of being worn only at night leaving the child glasses and contact lens free during the day. Not all methods of OrthoK are equal, Dr. Ranjeet Bajwa is certified wave designer, a more advanced custom OrthoK contact lens that is based on a map of the cornea using 14,000 unique points. This method has the advantage of being more accurate and comfortable.

Atropine eye drops are one of the most unexpected new treatment options for myopia reduction. The same eye drops used by your optometrist to dilate your eyes, Atropine is given in ultra small doses that do not produce any noticeable effects (such as a the dreaded inability to focus after an eye exam). Major studies such as the ATOM 1 and ATOM 2 have shown atropine eye drops to be highly effective at slowing down by around 50% even at ultra low doses. An even more intriguing new study showed Atropine as highly effective at preventing Myopia in pre-myopic children.

Using advanced designs developed over the last few years by the worlds biggest contact lens companies, multifocal contact lenses are fast becoming a major solution to one of the leading health concerns of this generation. Utilizing different zones for near, intermediate, and distance vision, multifocal contact lenses enable clear focus in one part of the retina while creating myopic defocus in the peripheral zone of vision. This method has been clinically shown to be effective with the most recent clinical trial in 2016 exhibiting a 70% reduction in progression.

  • Myopia, always common in children, is an increasing problem. The number of kids who are nearsighted has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. The reason for this remains blurry, yet one possible culprit is the increased amount of time kids spend indoors gazing at digital screens, with limited exposure to natural light.
