What Is Ortho K?

Ortho-K or orthokeratology is a refractive error treatment method that makes use of specially designed "retainers" for your eyes, they are like a gas permeable hard lens that is only worn while sleeping. The OrthoK lenses gently reshape the cornea (front of the eye) and when they are taken off in the morning, the cornea retains its shape; so, the person can go contact lens-free and glasses-free all through the day.

Ortho-K Candidate

Suitable candidates for ortho k lenses are people who have myopic vision but have otherwise healthy eyes, sports players and outdoor enthusiasts, emergency personnel and military, and as a LASIK alternative. It has been found to be most effective for people with at most -6.00D myopia and at most -1.75D astigmatism.

Not all patients will be good candidates for the use of these lenses. It does not work well for certain shapes of the cornea and for rigid corneas.

If you are interested, talk to our eye doctor, Dr. Ranjeet Bajwa at Buena Vista Optometry in Ventura CA and he can conduct tests to decide your suitability for these incredible lenses.

With OrthoK lenses, the level of the result varies from patient to patient. Some patients can go as long as 3 or 4 days without wearing their ortho k lenses or any glasses or contacts. Ortho K is a great method of myopia control for children as it significantly reduces the rate of progression with an average slowdown of more than 55%.

Benefits Of Ortho-K

In addition to the important benefit of reducing the risk of eye disease Orthok has other benefits. The main advantage of using ortho k lenses is the ability to be lens-free and eyeglass-free for the entire day. This helps kids to be confident and take part in sports and other activities with ease. It is also useful for sportsmen, especially those in swimming and water sports. Ortho K lenses are great for emergency personnel who require clarity of vision without the nuisance and danger of glasses or contacts.

Ortho-k lenses are better than the use of contacts as they do not pose problems like discomfort while wearing them (as the patient wears them during sleeping), drying of the eyes, and things getting under contacts.

It is a better option to Laser treatment as it is cost-effective and does not involve the use of antibiotics and other drops. It also does not have any post-operative pain and is available to a wider subset of patients.

What Happens During The Procedure?

Thereafter, a digital map of the shape of the cornea is obtained using a corneal topograph. A diagnostic retainer is fit based on this information. If the doctor considers you are a good candidate for ortho k lenses, your customized lenses will be ordered.

If the lenses fit well, you can wear them the same night you get them. Maintaining them is easy, and children as young as 8-10 are able to take care of them according to the instructions laid out by the eye doctor. In case of any problems, remove them and call us right away. After several follow-ups, most patients end up with a great fit and clear vision.

Ortho k lenses can have side effects just like any other contact lens. Initial discomfort is felt by some patients however it should not be painful. Because OrthoK lenses are worn at night, the vast majority of patients report no discomfort. If you notice any changes in vision or other problems, give us a call. Most side effects can be reversed within 3 days of removing the lenses.

How Effective Is Ortho-K For Myopia Control?

Orthokeratology has been seen to be one of the safest and most effective treatments for controlling the progression rate of myopia. With the correct fit, it can reduce the progression by 55 to 100 percent. It is the most effective methods of myopia control in children who have just developed myopia.

Dr Ranjeet Bajwa leftAt Buena Vista Optometry Vision Care, we take pride in offering advanced eye care services using the most advanced technology. Dr. Bajwa is a passionate advocate for myopia control.

"All of the latest research is showing that medium and high myopia is directly linked to higher incidences of severe eye diseases that cause blindness later in life. Luckily there are a variety of options to slow down myopia in children essentially removing all of the risks to the patient's vision as they age. Ortho K or as sometimes called CRT and Gentle Vision Shaping System (GVSS) is an example of a highly effective method of myopia control."

At Beuna Vista Optometry we provide Ortho K fitting for patients from Ojai, Camarillo, Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, and the Simi Valley.
