Q&A with Dr. Bajwa | Pediatric Eye Care

My son’s nearsightedness keeps getting worse – he needs a new prescription every year. Is there a way to stop this?

There is research that shows that progressive myopia can be stopped or slowed during the childhood years. There are a number of therapies that are used for what is called “myopia control” including multifocal eyeglasses or contact lenses, orthokeratology (ortho-k) or atropine eye drops. Speak to a pediatric optometry specialist to learn more about the options and what might work best for your child.

My child passed a vision screening test at school. Does he still need an eye exam?

Yes. Many schools implement a basic vision screening test to assess whether the child sees clearly at a distance, however these tests are limited in scope. They do not assess functional vision such as the child’s ability to focus, track words on a page or the eyes’ ability to work in tandem. They also do not look at the health of the eye itself. These tests are essential to know the comprehensive picture of how healthy the eyes are and how well they are doing their job. In fact, studies shown that up to 43% of children with vision problems can pass a vision screening test! A comprehensive eye exam will assess all of these functions as well as color vision, depth perception, and eye coordination.

Kids Eye Exams

Ensuring that your children have great vision now and into old age is our primary objective. As many as 1 out of every 4 children have a vision issue that affects their ability to learn. Every child should have eye exams following the recommendation of the American Optometric Association, at 6 months, at 3 years and before entering first grade. For children who require vision care, an annual eye exam is required, for asymptomatic children, an eye exam should be scheduled at our Ventura CA practice every 2 years.

In addition to preventing difficulties in school, a pediatric eye exam will ensure that your child's eyesight is protected into the future. Our optometrist, Dr. Bajwa, provides a comprehensive pediatric eye exam that not only looks at the child's ability to utilize their vision but also ways they can reduce risks such as reducing myopia progression and blue light protection.

Contact Lens Fitting In Ventura

Our optometrist, Dr. Bajwa, has extensive experience fitting contact lenses for virtually every patient. In his role as the president of the California Optometric Association, Dr. Bajwa has advocated for increased safety guidelines for contact lens fittings and purchase.

A revolutionary contact lens, called Scleral lenses provides patients with Keratoconus, severe dryness, corneal irregularities, and patients with difficulties finding contact lenses that are comfortable. Scleral lenses are custom contacts that provide unparalleled comfort and vision to some of the most complex cases.

Our optometrist also fits custom Ortho K lenses which are worn while sleeping and leave you with perfect vision during the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Ortho K is primarily recommended for myopia control, where wearing the contacts slow child's eyes from changing shape, preventing a new prescription and increased risks for eye disease as the child ages. Ortho K is also a great option for people looking for a non-permanent LASIK eye surgery alternative.

In addition to our advanced custom contact lens fitting, we fit virtually all types of contact lenses, daily contacts, weekly, monthly, rgp, and customized lenses.
